Gleditsia triacanthos, also known as honey locust and sweet bean tree is a thorny tree with small compound leaves that provide abundant shade. The tree's trunk sometimes has large spines that are a defense mechanism developed during the Ice Age. It produces pods that contain a sweet honey-like pulp enjoyed by animals.
